1. The separation liquid is turbid, and the solid recovery rate is reduced. The reasons and solutions are as follows:
(1) If the thickness of the liquid ring layer is too thin, the thickness should be increased.
(2) The amount of mud entering is too large, and the amount of mud entering should be reduced.
(3) The speed difference is too large, and the speed difference should be reduced.
(4) The inflow solids are overloaded, and the amount of mud entering should be reduced.
(5) The screw conveyor is seriously worn and should be replaced.
(6) The rotating speed of the drum is too low, and the rotating speed should be increased.

2. The solid content of the mud cake decreases. The reasons and solutions are as follows:
(1) The speed difference is too large, and the speed difference should be reduced.
(2) The thickness of the liquid ring layer is too large, and its thickness should be reduced.
(3) The rotating speed of the drum is too low, and the rotating speed should be increased.
(4) The amount of mud entering is too large, and the amount of mud entering should be reduced.
(5) The dosage of dry sludge should be reduced if the dosage of conditioning and tempering is excessive.

GN Technical Team has about 10 years’ experience on decanter centrifuge and has continuously improved GN product. Here is some experience shared by GN Technical Team. When the amount of sludge is constant, the thicker the liquid ring layer, the longer the sludge is separated in the liquid ring layer, and the more sludge will be separated. On the other hand, the thickening of the liquid ring layer reduces the possibility of some disturbed small particles being lost with the separation liquid.

Combining the above two aspects, the thickening of the liquid ring layer generally improves the solid recovery rate of dehydration.

However, the thickening of the liquid ring layer will correspondingly shorten the drying area, so that the sludge separated from the liquid ring layer will not have sufficient time to be “dried”, so the solid content of the mud cake will decrease.

When controlling the thickness of the liquid ring layer, a trade-off should be made between the high solids recovery rate and the solids content of the mud cake. Unless the dewatered sludge needs to be incinerated, in general, there is no need to pursue an excessively high solid content in the mud cake, and the higher the solid recovery rate, the better, so the thickness of the liquid ring layer should be increased as much as possible.

The decanter centrifuge is a spiral unloading sedimentation centrifuge. It is mainly composed of a high-speed rotating drum, a screw conveyor with a hollow shaft and a differential with the same rotation as the rotating drum and a slightly lower speed than the rotating drum. When the suspension to be separated is sent into the drum by the hollow shaft, it is immediately thrown into the drum cavity under the action of the centrifugal force generated by the high-speed rotation.

The high-speed rotating drum generates strong centrifugal force to sling the solid particles with higher density than the liquid phase on the inner wall of the drum to form a solid layer (because of the ring shape, called the solid ring layer); due to the low density of water, the centrifugal force is small Therefore, the liquid layer can only be formed inside the solid ring layer, which is called the liquid ring layer.

Due to the different rotation speeds of the screw and the drum, there is a relative movement (that is, the difference in rotation speed) between the two. The relative movement of the screw and the drum is used to slowly push the sludge in the solid ring layer to the cone end of the drum and pass through the drying zone. After that, it is continuously discharged from the outlets distributed around the circumference of the drum; the liquid in the liquid ring layer is continuously discharged from the weir to the outside of the drum by gravity to form a separated liquid.

When the clients come to GN for new projects, the Engineers always suggest the clients to answer a professional questionnaire, in order to find out the best model for clients’ project.

The questionnaire mainly includes questions as follow.
1. What is the main purpose of separation, and capacity requirement? For example, solids dewatering, solid-liquid separation, or solid-liquid-liquid separation. GN Engineers need to consider 2-phsae or 3-phase Decanter/Separator for clients’ projects.
2. What is the make-up of feeding inlet? What is the liquid phase and solids phase, and where are they from?
3. What is solid content percentage in the feeding inlet? It’s better to calculate the percentage by volume, instead of weight. Solids content plus capacity requirement can help engineers to find out the exact model. GN Company now is capable to manufacture 760mm bowl diameter decanter, with capacity 100~120 m3 per hour.
4. What is the solid particle in the feeding inlet? Engineers shall consider if it is necessary to add pre-treatment equipment, which can remove coarse particles. For example, 10mm particles.
5. What is the client requirement after treatment by Decanter Centrifuge? Some clients need the outlet cake to be as dry as possible, some clients need the outlet liquid to be clean, and some other clients choose between them.

There are some other details, which shall be put high attention on, for example, if the Decanter shall be explosion proof or not, if the feeding inlet has high corrosive (for example, high content of chloride), etc.
